EVALUATION

Evaluation
Investigation A (career plan)
This unit was all about careers and planning your future. To do this we had to make a career plan. To do this we first had to investigate and find out what our interests are. We had to write down everything that somehow interested us and figure out what we really want to do. Then we had to find out what we were good at and what skills we had and how we could use those skills in the future. To figure out what career would suit us best we did different test on the internet and the results would be different career possibilities. In the end we had to choose a career and research about it. I chose to be a chemical technician, because I am very interested in science, chemistry and math is easy for me to. I wanted to know more about it so then I decided to write and make a career plan about a chemical technician. TO do this we had to strictly follow the format given to us. First we had to decide what we wanted to become which in my case would be a chemical technician. With the research we had done, we had to write down all the requirements needed for this job. This was not that hard to do, because in the end you could just copy and paste the requirements since we couldn’t make those up. What I found interesting was that they also required to be other things then just be interested in science, math , but they also want you to be a critical thinker, an active learner, be realistic, have good time management, and you should have a lot of training. The next part was to write our current skills and interests, which in this case was not that hard either, because we had been thinking about all our skills and interests the last 3 weeks. I wrote down everything that interested me and I was good at in the area of science, math, chemistry, and I also wrote down my skills in being a good time manager, being very realistic. I also wrote some things for training, experience and education, even though I haven’t had the chance to do something there. I just wrote down what I will do and how I will do it. After we wrote our skills, we had to write about our plan to reach this goal. Here I chose to study in Delhi, India, to reach my career goal. This part was easy, but hard at the same time because we had to make a few things up, but be sure that we wrote the right things. We had to do some research colleges and what you had to do to reach your goal as a chemical technician.
Below you can see my career plan.
The next step we had to make a university entrance video. For this we had to use all the information we had collected.
Career goal:

To become a Chemical Technicians (people that work in the laboratory that deal with work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences)

Requirements:

•Mathematics – Using mathematics to solve problems is interesting, and useful. There is always a solution

•Science - Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.

•Critical Thinking – questioning answers until the definite solution is found. Evaluating, analyzing solutions and approaching problems

•Active Learning – Understanding and solving problems. Learning from the past and future by investigating carefully. Good decision making.

•Equipment Selection – excellent decision making for the tools needed to do a testing.

•Time Management – Managing time well for yourself and others.

•Realistic – Working with precision and realistic attitude to ones work. Being realistic with time management, solutions, tools and also thinking realistic about what is possible.

•Investigative – investigating the subject well. Finding out enough information for the study and finding of the solution. Having done enough research for the problem solving.

Current skills and interests:

•Mathematics- Math is interesting because it is so logical. You can always find a solution somehow. It is easy because you can always check your solutions and see if you did it correctly or not. Math is one of my favorite subjects because it is relaxing and so logic.

•Science- Science is very interesting, because it can tell us a lot about how and what things are made of. It is interesting how all living things function and how
they have chemical reactions to work how they want to.

•Chemistry- I just love experimenting and figuring out what the solution may be and what the reaction of two chemicals might be.

•Time management- I have good time management and mostly get everything done in time. It is not hard for me to stay focused and finish a project in time.
Plan to reach career goal:

•Education – Study medicine and chemistry in Switzerland for two years. Then study the rest in America. Get a master

•Training – Work at smaller jobs first to collect experience and knowledge. Have apprenticeships and work up to the best possible spot.

•Experience- Collect experience through college, apprenticeships and other related jobs. Experiment in your free time and have many different lab reports. The more precise the better.

The university entrance video was annoying, because I kept messing up. It took me forever to actually film a propper blocks of material for the video. I did it in blocks because I was never able to film everything with out messing up at once. By filming it in blocks, I could read off what I wanted to say and not mess up. Since Mrs. Wilson gave us all the information we needed to know what we had to put in, it was easy to rethink all the things we had to say. We had to include.
Your 3-minute video should include:
o Future career goal
o Qualifications
o Educational background
o Extra-curricular activities
o Volunteer work
o What makes you special (why they should pick you instead of hundreds of other students)
2. Design your video:
o Brainstorm a list of possibilities, including:
• Where you should film it
• What you’ll wear
• What you should include (what you will say)
• Who will film it for you
• What program you’ll use to edit it
• Background music, if any
And since we had already written down everything about us and our interests for the career plan, it was as simple as just to copy what we already had written. I filmed everything in blocks and had paragraphs written down for every block. In other words I just had to read off the screen. The good thing was that it looked like I was looking into the camera but actually I was reading. This made the filming easier and made me seem like a knew what I wanted to say. I included everything what we had to include. I made sure that I didn’t forget anything.
For the investigations it wasn’t always easy to just write down what you were interested in. I thought it was pretty hard, because there was so much, but at the same time it seemed like I had no interests at all. What I just did was write down everything I loved to do and what I would love to do. The questions Mrs. Wilson gave us were very helpful which forced me to actually answer them properly. What I also did was reflect on each activity that I had already done. The reflection took me forever, because there were so many activities to reflect on. All this information was very useful for me in the career plan and university entrance video.
I had Catriona and Reeza watch my entrance video, and both said that it was good. They also told me everything I could have done better, for example to have better lighting, and that the blocks didn’t go well together. To that I adjusted to what they said. I tried to improve the lighting of my video with the settings and edit it. I also tried to make the videos blend in more. It would’ve been good, but the problem was that the blending cut off parts of my video, which bugged me. They also said that I mentioned enough and that it was about the right side. Another thing they said was that I sounded really bored and wasn’t enthusiastic and you could see that I was annoyed with it. The worst part was that they were right. I was annoyed by it and I did talk very bored and not interested, but in the end most of it was good. To me it was important to know that I had included everything. Some of the information in my university entrance video is made up, because there was no choice. For example we had to make up what diplomas w had.
Criteria B
For criterian B we had to decide which job we wanted to research. I chose to become a chemical technician, because I am interested in math, science, chemistry and everything that has to do with medicine. The research for this job was easy because the website (mappingyourfuture.org) gave all the information you needed for this job right away. All the information I found about my career, was on this site. This sight made life a lot easier. The only thing we had to research outside of this sight was the university or college we wanted to study for our career.

Criteria A - Investigation

Future career goal: Chemical Technician

Qualifications: IB Diploma, High-School Diploma, Bi-lingual

I definitely want a college that requires an IB diploma, because then I know that the college is good and is international. I feel more comfortable if I’m around a community that has different viarieties because I’m used to being around being from different parts of the world. This way it allows me to be more open-minded about things and I collect a lot of different experiences.

Educational background: Silliman university elementary school (grades 1-2), International School of Rabaul (Grades 3-4), Center of education of Markdorf, Germany (grades 5-8) & International School of Ulaanbaatar (Grades 8-12)

Due to my parents I have fortunately experienced many different cultures and education systems, from normal governmental schools to IB schools. The different education styles have formed my Character.
Extra-curricular activities: ISU Girls Soccer Team, ISU Girls Volleyball Team, ISU Girls Basketball team, Different school plays, Soccer team of Center of education of Markdorf
Outside of school – Piano (3 years), Babysitting,

I enjoy playing sports and since I came to Mongolia I have been playing in teams and have been accepted to the different ACAMIS events, but due to money problems, I was not able to go. For me it was important to know that I would have been going if I had the money. Sports keeps me balanced.

Volunteer: Sweep- up, Trash pick-ups, backstage For different school plays

I have done different volunteer works last years, but this year I never that the opportunity to, due to health problems. I wish and regret for not being able to reach the required amount.

What makes me special: I am a Character that has never stayed in a country for over 4 years, due to my parents careers. I enjoy being so fortunate to experience the different cultures of Uganda, Cameroon, Kenya, Philippines, Germany, Papua New Guinea and now Mongolia. All cultures have given me an insight into new worlds and therefore shaped my open and learn interested Character. I am not a normal average child, because I have experienced many devastating things at young age, that shaped my opinions about death, bullying and Poverty. I am one of the few people that have been able to experience cultures not only from the outside, but have actually lived within them.

Develop a career plan

Get started now:
1. My career goal shall concentrate on the job chemical technician, because i like working in labs and having to think about the different solutions possible. I love math and chemistry, so I think it will be a good experience to construct a career goal plan for a chemical technician, because then I can see if I really like it and if it really is something I would like to do for the rest of my life.
2. Obviously I will have to study and go to college. I would love to go to college somewhere where I haven’t lived. I don’t see myself as a German nor a Swiss, because I’ve never really lived there for a very long time. I see myself more international and so I really want to go to a international college. I will have to have a high IB score to be able to go to the colleges that offer the study of chemical technicians.

Investigation Part 2

Investigation part 2

School
School is very important to me and I try to do my best because in the end it will affect my future. The better my grades will be, the more choices will be open for me. I think school is important for the future, but grades do not really show how intelligent you are. They only show that you are good at school. Most successful people we know today were horrible or even dropped out of school. I am not planning on dropping out of school, but I think grades don’t show how intelligent people are. Of course the better grades are, the more choices for colleges are open and therefore the more future choices you have.

Volunteer work

Sweep up day
This was a day where we just swept up the soccer field and removed stones and other obstacles. It was a whole lot of hard work and there were about 50 people helping. It took as about 5 hours to clean the whole field. It was on this day where I learnt that I do not want to work this hard all my life to earn money. I want to have a future where I have to think. I did it voluntary and earned CAS hours for it.

Clean up day
Clean up day is a day where we as a school community go somewhere, such as a riverbed and clean up this area. This day was a day where we really got dirty and cleaned up. Personally I wouldn’t have done it, but fortunately I was forced to do it. I think it taught me a lot about how our community can help others and the place actually looked clean for week after our clean up.

Talent show
This was completely voluntarily. At the talent show I performed with three others and danced for a crowd. During our practices we went through phases of loving and hating each other, but in the end we had a great performance and had a really fun night. I collected a lot of experience about cooperating with people and having to deal with people. I don’t really see entertaining people as something I want to do in the future.

School play
For the school play I was part of the back stage team, but to be honest I feel really bad for not being consistent and staying in. I didn’t learn a lot about being at the back of a stage, but I learnt about how being inconsistent and unreliability can affect others badly. I felt really guilty after this experience. I think I learnt a lot about being reliable and taking consequences.

Although I have done many other things that weren’t volunteer work, but still gave me a lot of experiences such as babysitting. I love children and am responsible. I have learnt a lot about children and I don’t really see it as something I would do my whole life.

List of activities I belong to
• Soccer
• Basketball
• Volleyball
• Running for fun

List of volunteer work
• Sweep up day
• Clean up day
• Talent show
• School play

Investigation for Career Possibilities

My Interests
I have many interests. Sports, art, math, science, chemistry and also things that have to do with the hospital are interesting and fun to me. I like playing soccer, volleyball, basketball and also hockey. I love exercising and being good in shape. I am also very interested in arts, especially pop art. I love painting and collecting new experiences with art, learning new things and also succeeding at them. Math chemistry and science are also one of my favorite subjects. I love math, because there is always a solution and it’s so logic and easy. I love science because I’m interested in how things work, and want to know about the newest species and other things like that. Science is something I’m interested in, but not something I would want to do for ever. I also like chemistry because it’s interesting how different things react to each other and with chemistry you can find out new medicine for the sick and since I have had experienced many cases where there wasn’t any medicine to take to cure the disease, because there just wasn’t anything to take. I think I would be very interested in finding new medicine and thinking about how to cure things. Since I was small I have always been interested in money. I loved going to the bank and seeing the money and since I love math, I think it would be pretty cool if my future had to do something with business. I always like to travel, so in my future I want to be traveling a lot. Since I have been traveling a lot as a child, and I’ve always seen new places and new areas, I can’t dare to think of staying at the same spot for more than 4 years.
So basically I want a future where I have to deal with money, travelling and math or something to do with chemistry and science and medicine.

Possible Career Paths for the ENFJ:
• Facilitator
• Consultant
• Psychologist
• Social Worker / Counselor
• Teacher
• Clergy
• Sales Representative
• Human Resources
• Manager
• Events Coordinator

Writers10 things I have enjoyed doing in the last four years
• Pottery
• Soccer/ Volleyball/ Basketball (or overall sports)
• Painting ( or mostly anything that has to do with art
• Modeling
• Learning different languages
• Traveling
• Dancing
• Math activities
• Activities where money and profit making was involved
• Communication and interaction activities

• Politicians / Diplomats
• Sales Representative

Evaluation of the different activities

Pottery
Potter was one of my favorite activities. I really enjoy doing it, because it is a challenge to shape the clay the way you want it without breaking it. I have only done organic pottery though. This is where you take bits of clay and either pinching or coiling the clay, but you can also use slabs. I really want to try out pottery with a fast electric wheel. I think to really be good at pottery, I will have to practice more and actually do it on a weekly basis.

Sports
I like doing sports, because I enjoy being fit and staying fit. It’s entertaining and keeps me busy. I think doing sports also makes me a little more principled, because I know when and what sports I’m doing and I have to be there on time, have my stuff and the more sports I do, the healthier and more confident I feel. I also love sports, because it challenges me to be better than other, to overcome your weaknesses and also reaching your goals. Doing sports is not only fun, but also makes you more principles and has many challenges waiting. To be really good at sports, I think I will have to become physically more fit and have a healthier diet.

Painting or generally art
Painting and doing art is also one of my favorite things to do. I really enjoy doing it and I do not mind spending a whole lot of time into one art work. While doing art I go through many phases of loving and hating my artwork. Sometimes I just want to burn it, but other times I love it, but in the end I always like the product and am happy that I made it the way I like it. The challenge in art for me is to make it well, and not give up on my piece. I always give my best to make it the way I imagined and yes sometimes it completely goes wrong, but then I at least learnt something.

Modeling
As a small child I have always dreamt of being a model and walking down the runway or having photo shoots. I really enjoyed walking down the runway. Those were probably the best 50 seconds of my life. To people it may seem dumb, or blond, but modeling is not as easy as it seems. I would never put my whole future into modeling, but I do think people should do what they like. The challenges in modeling for me were to really watch out what I was doing and to not look like a beginner walking down the runway. To be really good at modeling, I would have to take different walking courses and things like that.

Learning different languages
learning different languages for me is somehow easy for me. To me grammar is easy and I think if you study the vocabulary enough, it will seem easier. I want to learn many different languages, because then it will give me higher chances of getting different jobs. The challenge of learning languages is that I sometimes mix them up and that I forget the vocabulary too fast. To really be good at speaking languages, I think I will have to actually live in the country itself and be confronted with the language.

Travelling
Traveling to me is always fun and a new experience. I love seeing new countries, cultures and different lifestyles, activities. To me travelling opens a whole new world of adventure. I have always grown up travelling and so for me it is nothing new. I cannot imagine living in the same spot for a long time. The challenge with travelling is that you’re always confronted with new things and that you have to solve them. I don’t think you can be really good at travelling. I don’t think you can be really go at travelling. Traveling is just something that will confront you with new, random things. You can’t really prepare yourself for it.

Dancing
Dancing is something I do as a hobby, but it’s not something I’m really good at. I don’t take dancing courses or anything like that. It makes me go hyper and gives me a really good mood. The challenge in dancing is not to look stupid and stiff and maybe to become really good at it I should take dancing courses and really give all my effort into it.

Math activities
I love math, because it is so logic and there is always an answer. Tome it is fun to think and solve problems, but I hate word problems. I only really love algebraic problems or problems where I have to do a lot of math and logic thinking. the challenge in math is to get the right solution and I think to be really good at it I have to learn more about math and since I am only in 9th grade I don’t know that much yet.

Activities where money and profit making was involved
Since I was small I have loved money, counting money and having made a profit. For some reason I just love money and making profits through well thought projects or selling. I also love it because. The challenge in making a profit is obviously not to lose money and to be careful with it. To be best at this, I would have to study economy and business.
Communication and interaction activities
I guess this also has to do with language, but it also has to do with knowing how to interact with people and knowing how to react with peoples interest and behaviors. To know what messages you send and to know how and what impact you have to people is a good thing to know in my opinion. The challenge in this is to exactly chose your words and behavior and always show your best side. I think to really be good at this I would have to collect a whole lot more of experience and I think taking courses would also be an option.

Investigation Shakespeare

Criterion A
Our new unit is about Shakespeare and bringing it to modern society in a way that people will understand it easily. The title of our unit is “Modern Shakespeare”, because the majority in our class chose it. We chose ATL (approaches to learning) as our AOI because most of Shakespeare literature is very complicated and to understand it, we have to read it carefully and clearly. To actually be able to understand Shakespeare you really have to study his writing. We also chose it because we are learning obviously about Shakespeare. Then for the learner profile we chose communicators. We decided this because in most of Shakespeare’s literature language is very complicated and mostly has two or more meanings behind it. His work has a lot to do with how we take it and our way of communicating is different to the way Shakespeare communicated. Shakespeare had many different ways in communicating. That’s why we chose it as our Learner Profile. The unit is really about bringing Shakespeare into the modern world and making it easier for others to understand. To do this, our final project is to make a video about a part in the play “Much Ado Nothing” from Shakespeare but into a modern way. It should be interesting, understandable, appealing and funny for others from the modern world. To succeed at this project, I think it is necessary to have all the good equipment, have good lighting, film the scenes from different angles, and try to make it as realistic as possible. Of course the acting should also be good. There are many things we have to do to make a good video of the play. It will have to be edited, realistic, well acted, different camera perspectives, good lighting, good plot, good setting, well filmed, good camera and the required equipment for that, good/creative and realistic costumes, but to have a very well filmed video we need a good studio and very good cameras.
The unit question does apply to this project because the area the project is about creating a video that normal people nowadays will understand Shakespeare. If they understand it, it will be more appealing to them. How would it make sense to have a project that doesn’t relate to the beginning unit question? The unit question is “How can we create a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers?” and the project is to make a video that will be appealing to the modern day viewers. As a beginning of this project we should all answer the unit question, that way it will be easier for us to actually create it in the end because we brainstormed.
The study of Shakespeare is important because Shakespeare was a very excellent writer and he is counted as one of the most important writers of history. Studying Shakespeare will teach you more about the use of language and it having two or more meanings behind it. There are either dramatic or comedy plays. To understand the humor of Shakespeare you have to be able to read and understand his language. The dramatic plays also have the old English language. If you can’t read and understand the language, you won’t be able to understand the plays of Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s works are counted as an important part of literature and by not reading them you can miss out on a lot of good writing. By studying Shakespeare the old language also will not get lost in our society. Shakespeare is really important and should always be studied.
From this unit I expect to learn a lot about making videos and being able to edit them. I expect to be able to make a good video, and as in good I mean have good acting, good lighting, good plot, good setting, good equipment for smaller things, good camera in it. Obviously I will also learn about Shakespeare.
I have read a few Shakespeare books and am pretty familiar with the language. This is because I have done it in English class. After a while you kind of get the hang of it.
I think to create a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers; we have to make it like the things that come up on TV these days. So that people can develop interest in it. If people are interested in something, they will want to listen better and then they will of course understand it easier. It of course should also be in easy English. I think when we’re are about to film, or produce this video, we will split up into many different groups such as editing, camera and filming, acting, equipment manager, and maybe another group. I think this way it will be easier and more organized and that way the movie will be better, because we are organized. There are many different videos on YouTube and also tips on BBC for us to watch about making a good video. Everybody should watch them before the production of our video.
There hasn’t been any decision made by how we are going to make the video and what is going to be in it. For that we still have to wait until we get have written the scripts in English A class and I think we will decide what person does what depending on how well they are at the certain area.

Mine and Mrs. Wilson’s Design specification:
• The video should be easy to understand, funny, and interesting
• Should be different than other videos…something special
• Everybody should be involved in filming, acting, editing, costumes, background and etc.
• The video must be based on the play, using the names and events in the play exactly as they happen.
• The scripts must be written in modern English in the format of a news show (interview, documentaries, news reports, talk shows, etc)
• The video shouldn’t look cheap. It should look realistic and nice.

I think we should test the video by letting other people watch it and since this is a school, we could just let different classes watch it and do a survey about the video. They should answer questions about the video that the design specification gave. The answers of the survey should tell us exactly if we did a good job or not. Did they understand it and so on. I think if we let 6 graders watch it, they will be able to tell us if they understood it, because they probably don’t understand Shakespeare. It should also be showed to different teachers and staff, because they mostly criticize things very well and will give us exact detail on what should be improved.
it maybe could also be put on YouTube, depending on how many viewers and how many likes and dislikes and also comments, we can decide if people liked it or not. We can then see if it was a success or not. But in the end, a success is clearly shown by the grades given from Mrs. Wilson. =D

I interviews many different people about what we need for the making of the video.
What will be needed for the filming of the video?
person 1: a camera, some actors and actresses, props, costumes, editors, producers, directors, make-up, a computer
person 2: camera, actors, crew, settings, mic, props, costumesmake-up/hair, director, editor
person 3: camera, actors and actresses, script, plot, make-up, props, costumes

List of what I need to know before making the video:
How do I hold the camera, what angles are the best?
It is better to actually get close to the actor, instead of just zooming in and zooming out. The acting should be filmed several times to be able to film it from different sides and angles. This way the viewer will be able to see the actor talking from different angles and it will also make the film quality better and more realistic. By going closer to the actor, not only will it look nicer, but the sound will be better. The sound will then also be heard well.
Lighting, is it important?
Yes, it is. With good lighting from all the sides, the video will seem more realistic. Depending on the lighting, a different mood can be produced. If the lighting for example is all dark, it will seem more depressing and if everything is light and bright, it will seem more happy and exciting. We should have different lighting, depending on what the mood is of the script.
Sound, is it important? Of course it is. Without a good sound, the video wont be good. The actors should speak everything over again and actually record it without filming. Then the recorded sound can just be played as if the characters are talking. Here we have to be careful though. It has to be at the exact time. If this doesn’t work, the actors have to speak into a mic, which will not be visible for the viewers. Then the sound will be better too.
What equipment is needed for the video?
There are many things needed for a good video. You need good lighting and good sound to make it well. And the filming quality of the camera should be good too. The camera should be really good because if it is a cheap camera, it always seems as if it is filmed at home and we don’t want this. Realistic costumes, backdrop and setting are also needed to make the video quality better.

Evaluation
For this project we had to answer the unit question and also have a presentation about our assigned invention. I decided to make a poster. To test if my product, my poster and my presentation was good, I asked different people what they thought about my poster, positive and negative things about the poster and also what I could improve next time. I asked five different people, and they all had the same opinion about it. They said that the Barbie logo was nice and well done, but the layout overall could have been better. They said that it answered the unit question very well and also had enough information about the invention too. They said it was good, but the layout could have been better and neater. I actually fully agree with the others about my poster. I think I could have done a better layout and made it neater. The posters content is good and describes the invention and the unit question very well, but the layout and design of the poster does look very messy and it doesn’t really look that attractive. It also could have used a little more color, my poster rather has neutral colors, but Barbie is all about pink and really bright colors. I fully agree with the others about my poster and next time I will try to improve this.
For the investigation did the worksheet and also I made up many different questions and then I did some research to answer my questions. During my research, I learned a lot about Barbie and how inventors come up with their inventions. It took me a while to find information about Barbie that I actually could use. During my researched I thought that it was pretty hard to find web pages that had information about Barbie and not only were selling Barbies. After many hours of research I found all the information I needed for my poster and presentation.
Criterian C is plan. I think I did a good job at the plan. The plan is detailed and followed nearly every step. The plan describes everything very well and it is a very well planned plan :] I do have a few changes.
For criterion D, doing the actual project, I chose to do a poster. I thought a poster will describe and show everything I need. While doing the poster, I had trouble with the layout and how I should write everything. I was scared the poster won’t look nice because of my awful handwriting. To solve this problem I decided to type everything up. For the Barbie logo, I printed to logos out and in the end I traced it onto the poster. I also had trouble finding a Barbie logo that was big enough for my poster, but this was done after a while of research. Finding pictures of Barbie was easy. As soon as I had everything printed, I started putting it together. I noticed that I should have put the logo higher, because it took most of the posters space. This then didn’t look that neat. My poster actually said everything it needed to. It had enough information about Barbie and answered the unit question.
For next time, I could improve on the layout of my poster. With that I mean I should improve the neatness, the whole layout and it should just look nice. The poster was just too messy and didn’t have a very nice look. As one of the people suggested I should do better, was to have brighter colors since it is all about Barbie and Barbie is advertised in bright colors. It was all squished and didn’t have much to show. I think if I added a frame or more pictures it would have looked neater. Next time I will improve on all these things and have a prettier poster. During my presentation I had a lot of pauses, because I didn’t really prepare for it. I thought I knew everything and I didn’t need to prepare. In the end the presentation wasn’t that bad. I think if I had prepared, the presentation would have been way better.
I could also have been better at my research. In my opinion you never research enough. There is still a lot to learn about any subject and researching will never end. I researched and had a lot of information and I stopped researching as soon as I didn’t get anything new. Most articles about Barbie in the end were all the same and didn’t tell me anything new. In the end I had enough information and knowledge about Barbie to do my poster. To know what I’m looking for in the research, I made up 15 questions about Barbie. I wanted them all answered, but in the end there just wasn’t any information to half my questions. I had to narrow it down to only 7 questions. The question and answers tell you a lot about Barbie and give you the main idea.
For the plan, I can’t think of anything to improve. It had all the detail it needed and the only thing is that I didn’t really follow it as well as I could have. I had a few changes here and there. I mean it’s not really hard to write a plan and there isn’t much that can go wrong while making a plan. I have a few things here and there to improve and I hope that in the next project I will do better at everything.

Questions and Research

Questions and research
1.How did Ruth Handler design Barbie?
Ruth Handler came up with Barbie by watching the growth of her daughter. At that time Handlers company Matter was at that time already a leading business for toys. Handler noticed that her daughter passed all dolls, but preferred to play with dolls that were much older than her, dolls that had a good sense of fashion, were good looking and had shopped all day. Before Barbie was invented, girls like handlers daughter had to play with paper cutouts. So then Ruth decided to create the paper cutouts into a 3-D version, in other words she made the paper cutouts into real babies. Actually, Ruth Handler didn’t sculpture Barbie; she only created the design specifications and managed the process of Barbie. She let special technicians and engineers sculpture Barbie. Ruth Handler only came up with the design of Barbie and wanted Barbie to actually be sculptured.
2.Did Barbie change throughout the years?
Barbie did change throughout the years. There are many different clothing and accessories for Barbie these days. There are also many different Barbies dolls, such as a teacher Barbie, horseback rider Barbie, wedding Barbie and lots more.
3.Why was Barbie called Barbie and Ken called Ken?
Barbie was called Barbie after Ruth and Elliot Handlers daughter Barbara Handler. Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend was named ken after their son Kenneth Handler.
4.Are Ruth and Elliot Handler still alive?
Ruth Handler passed away on April 27, 2002 in Los Angeles, California. I couldn’t find the information about Elliot Handler.
5.How many Barbies are sold in a year?
Barbie is sold in over 100 different nations and it is estimated that the total sale is about $1.5 each year. Two Barbies dolls are sold somewhere in world every second of the day
6.How much does a Barbie cost nowadays?
Depending on the edition and what is bought. A Barbie can cost between 10-30 dollars.
7.Is Barbie still manufactured in Japan?
Barbie was manufactured in Japan at the beginning. Later on Barbie was manufactured in Korea.
8.Do Barbie and Ken look alike with Handlers children?
No. they do not look alike.

Criterion A Investigation.
This project is about inventors and inventions. The unit question is how do inventors come up with ideas and create their inventions?
I think inventors come up with their inventions by visualizing their environment and think about how to solve the needs of others and maybe also their needs. Ruth Handler for example invented Barbie, because she noticed that her daughter didn’t like the old fashioned dolls. She noticed that her daughter preferred to play with paper cutouts that had young and stylish models on. Ruth then thought why not create it in 3D and with that Barbie was created. Inventors in my opinion are creative, risk-takers and thinkers. They are creative with what they do and to come up with an invention, you have to be kind of creative. They also are risk-takers, because obviously they take risks in what they do and sometimes their inventions might be rejected. Inventors do take risks. Being a thinker is also part of being an inventor. I think inventor think about the needs of their surroundings and they think about how to solve the problems.
I think this project is very important and teaches us a lot. All the projects and also this project were done to be able to answer the unit question. I think it is very important that there are inventions and inventors, because without them the world wouldn’t grow and we wouldn’t improve our lives and also we wouldn’t develop further. Inventions don’t only make our lives easier, but also let us learn, develop and improve. Without inventions and inventors we would still be in Stone Age. Inventions and inventors are very important and without them the world wouldn’t be developing so fast. On one side inventions and inventors are good, but as soon as they invent things that are not good for us, it becomes a problem. But then with this, we can learn from the mistake and reflect on what we did wrong and how we could improve the invention. Inventions and inventions are very important and help the development of our world.

Evaluation
This unit was about inventors and their inventions. The AOI is Human Ingenuity and the learner profile is Risk-taker. We chose Human ingenuity for our AOI because inventions are made by humans and for the learner profile we thought as an inventor, you have to be a risk-taker. We discussed different inventors and figured out that they took a lot of risks with their inventions. They often kept it as a secret and the inventions were discovered after they had died.
Our unit project was to chose an already invented house hold item and improve it. We had to redesign it, prove that our design was even possible and then in the end hold a presentation about it. My group chose to improve and redesign a radiator. We invented a radiator that detects heat with an infrared camera and then finds the average temperature of the room. We proved this by doing a lot of research and we found out that airports use infrared cameras to detect heat. So then we came to a conclusion that it must also work if we put it into a radiator. The radiator can also be manually handled, in case the temperature is too high or too low and it would also in that case be cost efficient. Child safety is also provided for those who want it. There is a piece of rubber around each corner and sharp edge. They are wheels for portability and the radiator runs on electricity. This way it is energy efficient and cost efficient. It also comes in different colors, shapes and sizes. After we had done the research, we made our different designs. Each of us made three different designs for the radiator. Our final design was a mix of two different designs. We also came up with the “Da Fonk” edition, which are fun, crazy and cool radiators. They are colorful and extraordinary. We all had our different designs, but each of us work well with each other and gave each other ideas.
I think our group works well together and I really enjoyed working with them. We were often ahead of others, but this doesn’t mean that the quality of our work was worse. It means we did our jobs well and were finished in time.
For our presentation we decided it would be best to make a poster. We had our different designs on the poster and descriptions of the different designs. Unfortunately our poster got wet and looked a little messy. If you see it the positive way, the water made it look kind of cool, because there were different lines and marks. As we went on with the design cycle, we always had to check with our teacher and ask ourselves if our work was good, and if it would pass. We had different specifications for our designs, and all of them fit for our final designs and they also fit for the “Da Fonk” edition. For example one of the specifications was that it had to be child safe. All of the editions had a rubber attachment at sharp edges and corners. They all were transportable, energy and cost efficient. To check if our designs were appropriate, we had different specification. Some of them are mentioned above.
I think my group and I did a good job in this project, but we could have done a better research, a neater poster, and a better presentation. Our research had all the information we needed, but we only had internet sources. I think it would have been better if we would have had other sources. Over all I liked how my group and I worked together. We did our work, but we still had fun. I think that the work of a student is better if they have fun than if they work through it with complete boredom. As I already mentioned, our investigations could have been better. Even though we had all information we need, we could have had different sources not only internet. Designing the radiators was probably the best part of everything. We could show our creativeness and we had a lot of fun making up different editions, such as “Da Fonk”. Making the plan was easy too. It is not hard to plan everything, and we didn’t change anything. We followed the plan perfectly and didn’t have any difficulties with that. There isn’t much to say about plan, so ill move on with create. Creating the plan was easy. This was fun too. We had fun making the poster and we finished in time. The poster explains the radiator well and is easy to understand. It could have been neater, but unfortunately water spilt over it. As you can see, I am writing the evaluatioin now. I think my evaluation covers everything important. This unit was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it.
